Supermom?
Kira has been sick. Not just a little cough, but lay down in daddy's lap and not move all day sick. Of course, it was harder on momma than on anyone else, since I had to be at work while she was needing TLC. But, daddy has his own special version of medicine. Cookies, "jus" (Kira's word for juice), and lots of baby einstein videos! I'm sure she liked that better than motrin and vicks vaporub anyway.
Saturday night, she was especially lethargic and her fever spiked above 102. She layed her head down on my shoulder when I got home and sobbed. My heart broke, knowing that I was going to have to go to work in the morning again unless she was sick enough to go to the doctor. Overnight, her fever broke and her breathing evened out. I gave Jeremy specific instructions to call when they got up and had had breakfast to let me know how she was feeling.
At 10:30, about an hour past her normal wake up time, I began to panic. I called the house...knowing that I had turned down the ringer and answering machine before I left so it would not disturb Kira is she was down for a nap. No answer. I tried again. And again. And AGAIN! No answer by 12:30 when I finally left a panic message to CALL ME RIGHT NOW!
Thankfully, I work at a brand new facility and there was only one patient. I did what any other panic stricken mom would do. Gave report on the one patient and jumped in the car to head home and check on the situation.
What did I expect to find? I have no idea. It's not like they would have GONE anywhere. And if they house had caught on fire or had some other disaster, surely one of my many neighbors would have called me! Did I think that Kira and Jeremy had both been hurt in their sleep? Who knows, but I had it in my head that SOMETHING was wrong.
When I burst through the door Supermom style, Jeremy nearly dropped his breakfast on the floor! Breakfast? At nearly 1pm? Yup. Turns out Kira had slept right through until after noon. And of course, my husband, being the late night owl he is, slept with her.
Why didn't they hear my phone calls and messages? Because when I turned the ringer down, I turned it WAY down and I managed to turn the answering machine OFF!
Well, it was a nice, but stressful lunch break. I fed Kira and headed back to work, feeling slightly stupid, but relieved nonetheless.
